History

Ballantyne is a recent addition to the Greater Charlotte Region, as it was officially established in the 1990s. The area was originally an expansive hunting tract owned by the Harris family, descendents of Cameron A. Morrison, a former North Carolina governor. Three heirs of the property began acquiring more and more acreage and eventually sold the holdings to SouthPark developer, Smoky Bissell, for $20 million in 1995. Ballantyne was named after Bissell's maternal grandmother. Homebuilding in Ballantyne began shortly after this purchase in 1996.
